Ship drives

In line with our philosophy of developing environmentally friendly drives that improve efficiency, we have created a series of customer-specific direct drives for propeller applications, for instance as inline thrusters with an interior integrated propeller or as a direct drive for a propeller shaft. These motors are characterised by great output at low speeds and a geometry that is optimised to the application case.

PM synchronous motors - Dimensions

Size:
Flexible geometry, integration in the drive concept
Output:
up to 1500 kW
Torque:
up to 200000 Nm
Speeds:
According to customer requirements
Diameter:
up to  3000 mm
Special features:
Reduction in weight compared to conventional drives, energy efficiency, reduction in pollutants,

motors with very good control characteristics, compact, robust, low-maintenance to maintenance-free, wear-free, no-play, water cooling, low noise emission, improvement in the overall degree of effectiveness, high overload capability
Applications:
Ship building, from motorised yacht to transport/passenger boat

blueboat002Concrete specifications by the legislator in the area of pollutant reduction and the demand for improved energy efficiency, coupled with the long-term perspective that fossil fuels will run out, mean that it is vital to develop alternative drives for shipping.

For instance, we developed in close collaboration with one of our partners an innovative drive system based on a thruster. The propeller wings are assembled on the inner surfaces of the hollow shaft of the permanent-magnet synchronous motor. This results in a very compact and easy-to-integrate construction that is also highly resistant to seawater and contamination and is robust, easily accessible and very low-noise.

In the course of this development, an insulation system that meets the seawater conditions was designed. The series of motors developed is available in the performance range from 5 to 1500 kW.
